Opening a bank account in Mexico sounds like a basic step…but for most expats, it turns into one of the most frustrating experiences.
Not because it’s impossible —but because it’s not as straightforward as it should be.
🤔 Why it’s not as simple as it sounds
You walk into a bank thinking:👉 passport, address, done
But then…
They ask for an RFC
Or proof of address in your name
Or a Mexican phone number
Or documents you were never told about
👉 And sometimes… the requirements change depending on the branch
🧾 What banks usually ask for
This can vary, but most commonly:
Passport
Temporary or permanent residency
RFC (sometimes required, sometimes not)
Proof of address in Mexico
Mexican phone number
👉 The tricky part is not the list…👉 it’s that it’s not always the same list
🏦 Not all banks are the same
Here’s where things get interesting:
👉 BBVA
More structured
Can be stricter with documents
Slower depending on the branch
👉 Scotiabank
Often more flexible
Easier process in some locations
Friendlier with foreigners
👉 Same country, same system… completely different experience
👉 Banco Azteca
For expats, this can sometimes matter when it comes to:
international transfers
account verification
online purchases
or dealing with foreign institutions
👉 It can work perfectly for certain local needs, but it may not always be the best fit if you’re looking for a more internationally connected banking experience.
⏳ Timing (this is where people lose patience)
Opening an account can take:
1–2 hours if everything goes smoothly
Or multiple visits if something is missing
👉 And yes… you might be told to come back another day
😏 The real challenge
It’s not about filling out forms.
It’s about:
knowing which bank to go to
bringing the right version of each document
and handling the conversation correctly
Because even with everything “right”…👉 things can still not move forward
📍 Puerto Morelos reality
Some branches are simply better than others.
👉 The same bank in Cancún, Playa del Carmen, or Puerto Moreloscan give you completely different results
💬 Final thought
You can open a bank account on your own…but that doesn’t mean you’ll open it on your first try.
