Plates in Quintana Roo: What You Actually Need to Know (2026)

If you own a car in Quintana Roo, this is something you can’t ignore.
Here’s the simple version:
👉 License plates must be renewed every 3 years.
👉 Every year in between, you only renew your registration card (tarjeta de circulación).
Sounds easy… but it’s not always that simple.
⚠️ What changed (and why people are confused)
For 2026, the process now includes something called:
👉 REC (Registro Estatal de Contribuyentes)
This is a state registration you must complete before doing your plates.
Without it, you can’t move forward.
💸 Important timing (this matters)
The process starts in January
There are benefits if you pay early
After March, costs may increase and lines get longer
👉 Delays can mean extra charges and wasted time
📄 What they typically ask for
Current plates
Registration card
ID
Proof of address
REC
Payment
Sounds simple… until something doesn’t match or they ask for something extra.
😏 The part nobody tells you
You can absolutely do this on your own.
But…
Not everything is clearly explained
Not everything is consistent
And sometimes it’s not about language…👉 it’s about how things actually work here
💡 My advice
If you:
don’t speak Spanish fluently
don’t want to lose hours (or days)
or just want it done without surprises
👉 get help
🤝 Need support?
I help expats go through this process step by step —from understanding what you need to actually getting it done.
Because doing it is not the same as getting it done right.
