🏠 Renting in Puerto Morelos: What Nobody Warns You About

So... you found the perfect rental online.

The photos look amazing.The pool is beautiful.The price seems reasonable.

What could possibly go wrong? 😏

Quite a few things, actually.

Don't get me wrong — Puerto Morelos has some wonderful rentals. But after helping people relocate here for years, I've learned that what you see online and what you get in real life aren't always the same thing.

📸 The photos were taken on a very good day

Let's start with the obvious.

Photos are designed to make properties look their absolute best.

That doesn't mean they're fake.

It just means:

• the rainy season isn't in the pictures

• the construction next door isn't in the pictures

• the neighbor's rooster isn't in the pictures

• and the humidity definitely isn't in the pictures

  
  

😅 The famous "fully furnished"

This is one of my favorites.

In Mexico, "fully furnished" can mean:

👉 A beautiful move-in-ready home.

Or...

👉 A mattress, a plastic chair, two forks, and a microwave from 2007.

Always ask for:

• current photos

• an inventory list

• and clarification about what's actually included

Never assume.

💸 Deposits can be surprising

Many newcomers expect:

• First month's rent

• Security deposit

Simple.

But sometimes you'll also see:

• Last month's rent

• Pet deposits

• Cleaning deposits

• Contract fees

• Guarantor requirements

And suddenly that "great deal" costs much more than expected.

❄️ Air conditioning matters more than you think

You are moving to the Caribbean.

Ask:

• How old are the units?

• How many are there?

• Who pays for maintenance?

• What does the electric bill usually look like?

Your future self will thank you.

🐕 Pets change everything

Many listings say:

"Pets allowed."

Great.

But which pets?

One small dog?

Two cats?

Three Great Danes and an emotional support peacock?

Always ask for specifics before signing anything.

🔨 Construction is Puerto Morelos' favorite hobby

If you've lived here long enough, you know.

There is almost always:

• a house being built

• a wall being rebuilt

• a roof being repaired

• or somebody drilling something

This doesn't mean you shouldn't rent the place.

It just means you should visit the neighborhood at different times of day before committing.

🌴 The good news

Most rental problems can be avoided.

Not by being lucky.

By asking the right questions before signing.

A little homework today can save a lot of frustration later.

💬 Final thought

Puerto Morelos is still one of the best places to live in the Mexican Caribbean.

Just remember:

You're not renting the photos.

You're renting the reality behind them. 😏
